SQUARE is housed in Brussels' elegant Palais des Congrès, which was originally built for the 1958 World Expo. While the façade and various key features of the original building have been retained, we've added significantly more floor space, together with a contemporary sense of style and drama.
Original, large-scale wall paintings by key Belgian artists such as Magritte, Delvaux, and Van Lint dating back to the 1960s have been carefully restored and integrated into the fabric of the design.
Capacity has been vastly increased, with auditoria seating 1200, 500, 300 and 150 people, a 4,000m² multi-purpose hall, and many modular rooms. A striking glass entrance provides a dramatic point of focus in Albertina Park.
This extensive renovation programme has overseen by Brussels-based architectural firm A.2R.C, and enhanced by a team of international experts, including Portuguese interior designer Juan Trindade, French lighting designer Roland Jéol, and flamboyant Belgian artist-designer Arne Quinze.
Building work started in April 2007, with 200 construction workers on site for 500 days, pushing towards the grand opening on 20/09/2009 at 20.09pm.
The project was commissioned and realized by Palais des Congrès, a public law plc. The delegated supervisor is SPF Mobilité et Transports - DIT, and the contractor is CFE-Besix-Jacques Delens.
